Downing Street Playgroup

School Philosophy

The Downing Street Playgroup is a parents cooperative preschool started thirty years ago by a group of parents concerned with their children's education. The combined three and four year old class is directed by a certified teacher working with an assistant teacher and a parent teacher. Parent participation is an integral part of the success of the Downing Street Playgroup. Our aim is to create a supportive environment where learning is enjoyed, valued and becomes a life-long goal.

At the Downing Street Playgroup, children learn to socialize with their peers, have fun and express themselves through the creative arts. They are encouraged to voice their own feelings and opinions as well as taught to respect the feelings and rights of others. As the children learn more self-help skills, their self esteem and sense of personal responsibility grow. Sharing their own experiences and observations, as well as listening to those of others, helps the children to become active members of their school community.

The preschool has traditionally emphasized development and self expression through the creative arts. Towards that end, music and movement specialists come to the class each week to work with the children. Other activities include books and stories, art projects, cooking, games, conversation and trips through the neighborhood. These activities and experiences allow our children to interact with their environment while gaining an understanding and mastery of basic skills and concepts relevant to each child's intellectual, emotional and physical needs. At the Downing Street Playgroup, children are instilled with the sense of being important, competent, wonderful and loved human beings.
